Top tips for contractors
Research shows that last Friday was the day people were most likely to break their New Year’s resolutions. If you’ve fallen victim to 'Fail Friday' and waved goodbye to your good intentions it’s not too late to get back on track. Why not try one of these ways to get your work life in order for a successful 2014:

Plan for the future
If you’ve not got a pension, make 2014 the year you get one. With the working age creeping up and the state pension pot looking increasingly unreliable it’s more and more important to take control of your future finances. If you are a Sterling Umbrella employee contact our HR department for pension advice. Another good source of information is the Citizens Advice Bureau or it couldbe worth getting advice from an Independent Financial Advisor.

Assess your workload
As a contractor it’s always sensible to keep track of fluctuations in your workload and the start of a new year is a good time to look back over the previous year to assess how it went. If you had seasonal peaks maybe it’s time to make a list of contacts to approach for work at the quieter times. If you were juggling multiple jobs and your work/life balance went out the window it could be time to work out which jobs are your real priorities this year.

Update your CV
The very nature of being a contractor means it’s important to have an up to date CV ready to send out. If you’ve got a busy workload it can easily slip down your to do list but keeping on top of it will save time when you do need to send it out and it also helps you focus on keeping your career going in the right direction.

Get expert help if you need it
Aspects of contracting can sometimes be confusing and keeping on top of everything can be difficult so don’t be afraid to ask for help or support. Not everyone can be great with numbers, so if tracking your finances gets too much consider asking an accountant to take care of it for you. Try AGP, they know the contractor industry inside out. And don’t forget we’re always here to help, try our live chat service and speak to one of our advisors if you’ve got any questions or queries.
